Grinspoon are Aussie rock royalty. From their 1995 Triple J Unearthed win, they have forged their own path and taken the good with the bad and more. As a celebration of this, they decided to head out on the “Chemical Hearts” tour.

Once again we find ourselves at The Fortitude Music Hall, which is quickly becoming the premier music venue in Brisbane. Bugs started off the night, with a quick set but a well received set. It is nice to see people out early to support.

Newcastle two piece The Gooch Palms were the surprise packet of the night. Such a fun upbeat band that while not taking themselves seriously, were musically amazing, and so engaging with the crowd. Everyone should give them a go! The Hard Aches were next up. They have a stripped back garage sound, but have songs full of great hooks and melodies and special shout out to their bassist for getting out on this tour and playing while having a torn ACL. Legend Effort.

The wait was not long, though it felt like forever for our headliners to take the stage. And as the curtain dropped Phil was smiling from ear to ear while dancing with their candy chemical heart mascot. Opening with the blistering “DC x 3” the band took no prisoners from the get go. “Lost Control” and “Sickfest” elevate the crowd, and we start to see our first round of crowd surfers.

The sound and lights are perfect and provide the perfect accompanyment to the band who you can tell spent alot of time nailing down these songs. Not enough can be said about how phenomenal they sounded. Kris Hopes and Joe Hansen are the rhythm section from hell, Pat Davern is so underrated as a guitar player. Always playing for the song and not for ego. And what can you say about Phil Jamieson….. A never ending source of energy, and he looked so happy and thankful to be sharing his songs with such an appreciative audience. He commanded the entire stage and gave face time to the entire crowd.

They ran through all the songs that we know and love, and Phil hit a small stage near the soundboard to deliver a solo rendition of “Sweet As Sugar” which was full of emotion and the crowd were the perfect back up.
Hit after hit kept coming and when the band launched into their cover of INXS “Don’t Change” the sold out crowd just about tore the place apart. The band departed the stage for a brief moment before delivering a knock out encore of “Chemical Heart”, “More Than You Are” and “Champion”. As confetti rained over the Brisbane crowd its safe to say this was one of the gigs of 2019 and come end of the year might take top spot.
