Q + A: SOMA

Q + A: SOMA

In an era where music transcends mere entertainment to become a conduit for healing and connection, Sydney-based artist SOMA emerges as a compelling voice in the alternative hip hop scene. With the release of her new single “Say It,” produced by the legendary Danny Duke, SOMA invites listeners into a world that blends sultry melodies with futuristic soul. This track serves not only as a prelude to her debut mixtape, COBRA, set to drop on February 21, but also as an artistic declaration that encapsulates the essence of her journey as an artist. “Say It” is a bold narrative that explores the complexities of love through the lens of an otherworldly connection—an alien falling for a human—symbolizing the universal longing for acceptance in a world where one often feels out of place. We caught up with SOMA for a Q + A

Tell us about yourself, how long have you been performing/creating music for?

Music has always been my way of speaking what words can’t capture. I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember, but I started performing and sharing my work with others in my teens. Each song feels like a step closer to something deeper, more personal, and more expansive.

Who are your greatest inspirations? Why?

I find inspiration in those who break boundaries—Prince for his fearlessness in genre and expression, Frank Ocean for his raw vulnerability, and Tame Impala for his sonic adventures. These artists don’t just create music; they build worlds, blending emotion with sound in ways that make you feel like you’ve entered another dimension.

How do you create music? Are you lyrics/story driven, or does the music/melody come first? Explain your process.

It’s a dance between the two. Sometimes a melody will spark a mood, and other times the story or lyric leads the way. I like to explore the unknown—whether I’m building from a beat or a lyric, the process always feels like discovering something hidden in plain sight, a fusion of sound and soul.

What has been your greatest challenge so far in performing/creating music?

The most challenging part has been balancing the art with the business. It’s easy to get lost in the noise, but staying true to the music while navigating the industry’s demands requires constant self-reflection and trust in the process.

Tell us about your new release, Say It, how did it come about?

Say It came from a desire to explore desire itself—this magnetic attraction that pulls you in, the one that lingers, that you can’t shake. I wanted it to feel playful and lighthearted in contrast to the heavier themes of my upcoming mixtape. It’s a story told through an alien’s eyes—someone falling for a human, drawing on metaphors for love and longing.

What advice do you have to artists who are just starting out?

Find your voice and protect it. There will be a lot of noise telling you what you should be or do, but your unique perspective is your power. Trust your instincts, and remember that growth comes from embracing the process, not just the outcome.

Tell us your favourite Zen practice.

Breathing deeply and being present in the moment—whether through meditation, swimming in the ocean, or simply taking a walk without distractions. It helps quiet the mind, allowing clarity to rise naturally, much like music does when you let go and listen.
