🎄 Ho Ho Ho! 🎄 Merry Christmas from our wild and wonderful crew!
Christmas came early for Brisbane this year in the form of Good Things 2024, a traveling music circus that has quickly become one of the most anticipated events on the Australian music calendar. Music enthusiasts from all corners flocked to the venue, ready to immerse themselves in a day filled with unforgettable performances, camaraderie, and the scorching (understatement) summer sun.
As the day unfolded, it became clear that Good Things was not just another festival; it was a testament to the resilience and passion of the Brisbane music community. It was a day where even the arrival of a cloud to briefly block the sun was met with thunderous cheers, almost louder than the bands were getting, a clear indication of just how intense the conditions were.
Bowling for Soup opened the main stage with their infectious energy, and frontman Jaret Reddick earned the respect of many for battling through his set while feeling unwell. His determination to not only perform but also engage with fans, and also with us in our media tent after his set, and then as he went off to check out other artists sets, showcased the camaraderie that defines the music scene.
Imminence stood out, impressively navigating the heat in their all-black attire while delivering a set that you could tell connected with the audience. The Butterfly Effect and Frank Turner also garnered fantastic receptions, reminding attendees of the incredible talent that graced the stage. However, the festival’s diverse lineup also included 311, whose 20-year absence from the Brisbane scene seemed to affect their attendance.
Nevertheless, Northlane cranked up the heat to a blistering level, captivating the crowd with their powerful sound. As the day progressed, the punk rock legends L7 delivered an unforgettable set, while Mastodon continued to demonstrate why they deserved their place on the main stage, continuously honing their craft. The ever-vigilant Red Frog crew ensured the safety and well-being of attendees, embodying the spirit of community and care that is so vital at such events.
Killing Heidi paid homage to their remarkable album, “Reflector,” giving both new and longtime fans a moment to cherish. With the heat intensifying and the risk of sunstroke looming, The Violent Femmes brought a refreshing burst of fun to the atmosphere with their classic “Blister in the Sun.” Kerry King, renowned for his powerful guitar riffs, unleashed new tracks with his band, showcasing his new bands amazing album. And when you have Paul Bostaph behind the kit, you cannot go wrong
Meanwhile, Billy Corgan’s collaboration with The Delta Riggs was met with mixed circumstances as his set coincided with Korn’s performance. Nevertheless, he powered on, , delivering a stunning cover of INXS’ “Don’t Change” that left a lasting impression.
The anticipation for Electric Callboy was fever pitched, and they did not disappoint, featuring an extravagant show complete with pyro, singalongs, and costume changes.
Korn, celebrating 30 years of their influential career, delivered a solid performance, though some felt that their stage volume dipped, impacting the overall intensity of their set. As a storm loomed on the horizon, the festival wrapped up safely, leaving attendees with cherished memories and a sense of fulfillment.
Good Things 2024 was a remarkable testament to the growing festival culture in Brisbane. The hard work and dedication of the team behind the event did not go unnoticed, with Destroy All Lines deserving commendation for orchestrating such a vibrant celebration of music. As the sun set on an unforgettable day, it was clear that the festival had solidified its place in the hearts of the Brisbane faithful, ensuring that the excitement for next year’s edition would be palpable long before the gates open again.
