Red Hot Summer Tour is an Aussie festival institution, for over a decade now, it’s a destination event for the Aussie music lovers. It just keeps getting bigger and better. Heading out 2 hours west of Brisbane to Toowoomba, for an amazing family friendly event.
The weather was not on our side, and a few times through the day lightning was seen off in the distance, and the ponchos were simply not nearly enough to keep dry.
The Waifs are pure energy and undeniable charm, proving why they’ve been staples of the Australian folk and blues scene for over three decades. Led by founders Vikki Thorn, Donna Simpson, and Josh Cunningham, along with their talented touring band, they showcased their versatility with instruments like mandolin, guitars, and harmonica, swapping lead vocals effortlessly. Their longevity and connection with the audience were clear, and the crowd’s enthusiastic response confirmed their status as folk-rock legends.
Mark Seymour then took the stage with the legendary Vika & Linda and members of his band, The Undertow. Together, they steamrolled through a set mainly featuring classics from Hunters & Collectors. The audience sang along passionately to staples like “Throw Your Arms Around Me” and “Holy Grail”. Seymour also shared personal stories behind songs like “Westgate,” about Australia’s worst industrial accident, adding depth and meaning to the performance. Vika & Linda showcased a new song, “Where Do You Come From,” highlighting their ongoing cultural narrative about heritage, resilience, and standing up against discrimination.
The atmospheric presence of The Church added a different, introspective layer to the evening, performing lush, ambient tracks amidst tropical rain. Singer Steve Kilbey’s vocals struggled with technical issues due to the weather, but their classics like “The Unguarded Moment” and “Under The Milky Way” still resonated deeply with the audience. Kilbey’s playful banter about the song’s legendary status sparked sing-alongs as crowds joined in on the iconic chorus. Their latest album, “The Hypnogogue,” also made an appearance, showcasing the band’s evolving sound, even as they navigated the rain-soaked stage with resilience and charm.
Next up was Angus & Julia Stone, whose folk-pop sound brought warmth and harmony to the rainy evening. The sibling duo played both gentle, confessional tunes and energetic tracks, even sneaking in a cheeky cover of Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight.” Their seamless collaboration and heartfelt vocals set a perfect mood for what was a night full of memories and musical magic.
Finally, Crowded House mesmerized the crowd with a set blending timeless hits like “Weather With You” and “Better Be Home Soon” with new material, and a trip back in time to highlight the newly reunited Split Enz. Neil Finn and Nick Seymour kept things lively with banter and jokes, wrapping up a remarkable night of live music that left everyone energized, inspired, and eager for more.
Red Hot Summer Tour truly delivered an incredible day filled with unforgettable live music in a stunning outdoor setting. It’s an energetic, family friendly and all inclusive day of fun, where you will get to see legendary acts across Australia’s beautiful venues. It was a remarkable experience that showcased the best of summer concerts. An amazing day that will be remembered for a long time.
