HOTEL MIRA share new single KING OF THE WORLD ahead of their upcoming performance at SXSW Sydney
Ahead of their upcoming appearance at SXSW Sydney next month, Canadian band Hotel Mira today share their new single ‘King of the World’, lifted from their highly-anticipated album I Am Not Myself out October 27.
Filled with quintessential indie-rock guitar riffs, dynamic drum fills, and vocalist Charlie Kerr’s soaring vocals, this lively new track sees Hotel Mira’s personality really shine through. Featuring some of the band’s most playful lyrics to date (“I’m in need of a quick lobotomy / Do you know someone good?”), ‘King of the World’ is mildly self-deprecating, and a whole lot of fun.
“At the heart of the song ‘The King Of The World’ is a pretty simple message. I am bad news. I make the same mistakes over and over again and your approval and endorsement of me doesn’t comfort me or bolster confidence at all. Your desire of me makes me more suspicious of your taste. I want my self-destruction to have the smallest blast area as possible. I think we all remember what happened to Jack at the end of the titanic. The King Of The World wound up freezing to death.” – CHARLIE KERR, HOTEL MIRA
‘King of the World’ is the latest taste of upcoming album ‘I Am Not Myself’ – Hotel Mira’s first full-length release in over three years – following on from recent singles ‘Mama’, ‘Everything Once’, and ‘Dancing With The Moonlight’. Out on October 27, the album’s creation was a transformative process for the band, with Kerr writing the bulk of the album while travelling between Vancouver and his now-adopted home of Los Angeles.
It’s suggested that I Am Not Myself — its title actually a key line from ‘Dancing With the Moonlight’ — takes place within various points of an identity crisis, with the concept of ‘identity’ becoming the connective thread between the album’s 12 tracks.
“I think that there is value to expressing unsavoury things about oneself, and peeling away shame. If this music has a purpose, I think it’s to show people how engulfed by shame we are, and how universal that is to the human experience. By pinpointing my own, hopefully people are more forgiving of theirs.” – CHARLIE KERR, HOTEL MIRA
This album has been highly anticipated by fans across the globe, with Hotel Mira being on an impressive upwards trajectory since their outset. Their hugely successful recent US/Canadian tour included 27 headline dates, with the band previously sharing stages with the likes of Billy Talent, Foals, USS, The Beaches, and July Talk – as well as the legendary Frank Iero (from My Chemical Romance). Having been invited to perform at festivals around the world including Westward Music Festival, SKOOKUM, Pemberton, Reeperbhan and The Great Escape, Hotel Mira are excited to land in Australia in just a few weeks time to captivate audiences at SXSW Sydney.
