Today, acclaimed singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke announces her forthcoming album ‘The Kiss and The Abyss’, alongside the release of its first single and video, ‘Holiday’, and a national Australian tour.
Written with long-time collaborator Keir Nuttall and recorded in England with producer Tom Iansek, ‘The Kiss & The Abyss’ finds Miller-Heidke returning to the folk influences that first shaped her songwriting, while embracing darker textures, theatrical storytelling and richly layered arrangements.
Leading the album is ‘Holiday’, an irresistibly offbeat slice of observational pop that captures the all-too-familiar experience of placing impossible expectations on a much-needed escape, only to watch it unravel in real time. Built around a hypnotic guitar motif and peppered with sharply funny, deeply relatable details – from potato scallops and disappointing beach days to mosquito bites and existential dread – the track is both wryly hilarious and quietly poignant.
“It’s about needing a holiday so much that you sabotage your own holiday,” says Kate. “You anticipate it for months, and then somehow it all goes spectacularly wrong. I think everyone has experienced that.”
Directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker John Sheedy (The Rabbits, Runt), the video features much loved drag queens Serenityand Lazy Susan (winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under Season 4) amongst a colourful cast of characters who weave in and out of the story, embodying the wonderfully awkward, chaotic spirit of an old-fashioned Australian beach holiday.

Across eleven songs, ‘The Kiss and The Abyss’ navigates beauty and darkness in equal measure, drawing on gothic folk traditions while remaining unmistakably Kate Miller-Heidke: fearless, emotionally raw and impossible to pin down.

ABOUT KATE MILLER-HEIDKE
Kate Miller-Heidke is one of Australia’s most versatile and acclaimed artists – a singer-songwriter whose career seamlessly traverses contemporary pop, folk, musical theatre and opera. Across an extraordinary body of work spanning multiple studio albums, she has earned five ARIA Awards, represented Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest, and received critical acclaim both at home and abroad for her fearless songwriting and distinctive voice.
Classically trained at the Queensland Conservatorium, Kate has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the English National Opera, while also building a celebrated career as one of Australia’s most original contemporary songwriters. Alongside long-time creative partner Keir Nuttall, she co-wrote the hit musical Muriel’s Wedding: The Musical, which premiered in Sydney before transferring to the UK, earning multiple Helpmann Awards, including Best Original Score.
Beyond the stage and studio, Kate has become a familiar face on Australian television as a coach on The Voice Australia, where she has mentored emerging artists across multiple seasons, further cementing her reputation as one of the country’s most respected and influential musicians.
