News: Q + A With Flynn Gurry

Hailing from Warrnambool in Victoria, Flynn Gurry has spent the past few years rapidly making waves in the Australian music industry, most recently signing to Cult Artists for bookings and Woolstore Music, the management company helmed by beloved indie folk duo Pierce Brothers, and also inking a deal with ABC Records. Following a remarkable few years supporting the likes of Ian Moss, King Stingray, Ash Grunwald and Kim Churchill, Flynn also won the triple j Unearthed One Night Stand competition in 2024, which saw him perform alongside G Flip, Ruel, What So Not, Thelma Plum and more at their event in Warrnambool. Shortly after, Flynn became a triple j Unearthed feature artist, going on to support The Dreggs on a national tour, and closed out 2024 performing at Beyond The Valley Festival. And with 2025 now firmly in full swing, Flynn has already ticked off a national tour with Pierce Brothers, but also took some time out for a quick Q + A.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to chat with Hear 2 Zen, what have you been up to today?

I just came back from a great surf so the vibes are high!

Tell us about yourself, how long have you been performing/creating music for?

Started writing songs and playing them live around age 17, caught the “gig bug” and have been playing shows ever since.

I have always loved music however I didn’t start playing until I was 17. Have been completely hooked since then writing songs and playing shows.

Who are your greatest inspirations?  Why?

I grew up going to the Port Fairy Folk Festival and I think that is where so much of my inspiration comes from. Some of the best storytellers and songwriters play that festival and I only realise now how lucky I was to grow up 20 minutes down the road from it and being able to experience that talent every year.

How do you create music?  Are you lyrics/story driven, or does the music/melody come first?  Explain your process.

Definitely I would say story driven. For me I always have a guitar around the house that I am noodling on and when a melody comes I take it pretty quickly to the guitar. Have been trying recently to finish the song in its entirety before taking it to the computer and having production carry the song. I think it has been working.

What has been your greatest challenge so far in performing/creating music?

Finding a balance between playing enough shows and still feeling creative can be tricky. I find if the touring schedule is too intense I don’t write enough as I would like.

Tell us about your new release, Don’t Stop Dreaming, how did it come about?

This song was written post-comedown from my first big tour. The last show I had played on that tour is still one of my most memorable shows and I had begun writing the lyrics in the green room whilst the headline band was playing. The song has since become a reminder to keep going and keep dreaming.

What advice do you have to artists who are just starting out?

Try to play as much as you can ( open mic’s, markets, busking ). Try to keep writing as much as you can.

Tell us your favourite Zen practice.

I love some breathing exercises I do, however I think my favourite Zen place is out on the water.
