Review: Cirque Du Soleil – Corteo

Corteo by Cirque du Soleil is an absolutely enchanting spectacle that transcends ordinary performance art, weaving a surreal tapestry of emotion, whimsy, and breathtaking acrobatics. From the moment the show begins, you’re transported into a dreamlike world where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur into a mesmerizing parade of wonder.

This production is a heartfelt ode to life itself, portrayed through the poignant story of Mauro, a clown reflecting on his own funeral procession, or Corteo.. It’s a celebration of life’s fleeting beauty, infused with joyous antics, poetic visuals, and an infectious energy that lights up the entire auditorium. Unlike some of Cirque’s more supernatural or flashy shows, Corteo takes a more intimate approach, drawing the audience into a warm, romantic, and deeply moving experience.

The costumes and set design evoke a bohemian charm reminiscent of commedia dell’arte, blending old-world elegance with dreamlike artistry. Every scene feels like stepping into a painting, with graceful movement, vibrant colors, and inventive stagecraft that dazzle your senses. The music is hauntingly beautiful, weaving seamlessly into the choreography and acrobatic feats that seem to defy the laws of physics.

One of the most captivating moments involves the aerialists, flying gracefully from chandeliers and performing death-defying stunts that seem to suspend time itself. The trapeze acts are sublime, their elegance accentuated by the ethereal lighting and spirit of pure joy. The talented performers’ control and dedication shine brightly, making each daring leap feel like a miracle.

Humor and surprise are woven throughout the show, whether it’s the hilarious antics of the lady with the balloons or the cheeky clown sketches that leave the audience in stitches. These lighter moments perfectly complement the more profound, poetic scenes, creating a harmonious balance that makes Corteo such a compelling experience.

Watching performers bounce on trampolines that resemble beds, or see a tiny clown float above the crowd with balloons, you realize you are witnessing more than just a circus; you are experiencing a heartfelt celebration of love, life, and the agency of the human spirit. Mauro’s journey through childhood dreams, youthful adventures, and peaceful acceptance culminates in an uplifting finale that leaves everyone in awe.

Corteo is more than a show; it’s a vivid, emotional journey that invites you to reflect, laugh, and dream, and is amazing for all ages. We took Junior Reviewer Mr. 11 to last night’s performance in Brisbane, and he was captivated from beginning to end, and reveled in the story of Corteo just as much as the performance, where as Mum and Dad took in all of the performance, he was able to have that as the accompaniment to a great story line. I will say you should never go into a Cirque show expecting it to be like any other you have seen. Clear your mind, open your heart and go on the journey, as you won’t be disappointed. Prepare to be inspired, uplifted, and utterly mesmerized.
