Looking Back
The band was almost a decade disbanded when I got my introduction to their music. Sitting in back room of my family home I was looking for something to take me away from my read along with the vinyl story. THEN it happened – I came across an album. Four guys dressed in suits looking down at the camera which I later learned was taken at EMI house in February 1963. I picked it out and told Mum I wanted to listen to this album from a lot of around 50 albums my parents had on hand at the time.
Today
The Beatles’ debut album, “Please Please Me,” released in 1963, marked the beginning of a revolution in the music industry. This album, which was recorded in a mere 10 hours, showcased the band’s raw energy, charisma, and songwriting talent. The 14-track album is a testament to the band’s ability to craft catchy, memorable songs that have stood the test of time.
From the opening chords and Paul’s count in “1,2,3,4” of “I Saw Her Standing There,” it’s clear that The Beatles are something special. The song’s upbeat tempo, combined with John Lennon’s raspy vocals and Paul McCartney’s melodic bass line, sets the tone for the rest of the album. The next track, “Misery,” features a haunting harmonica riff and a memorable vocal performance from Lennon.
The album’s title track, “Please Please Me,” is a masterclass in songwriting. The song’s catchy melody, combined with its heartfelt lyrics, makes it a standout track. The song’s success can be attributed to the band’s ability to craft a song that appeals to a wide audience, and it’s no surprise that it was their first single to reach number one on the UK charts.
One of the standout aspects of “Please Please Me” is the band’s ability to blend different styles and genres. The album features a mix of rock and roll, skiffle, and folk, which gives it a unique sound that sets it apart from other albums of the time.
The album also features several covers, including “Anna (Go to Him)” and “Chains.” These covers showcase the band’s ability to interpret and make their own, songs written by other artists. The Beatles’ version of “Boys,” which was originally recorded by The Shirelles, features a memorable vocal performance from Ringo Starr and a catchy guitar riff.
In addition to the band’s musical talent, “Please Please Me” also showcases their sense of humour and wit. The song “Do You Want to Know a Secret” features a catchy melody and humorous lyrics, which add to the album’s charm.
Throughout the album, the band’s chemistry and camaraderie are palpable. The Beatles’ ability to work together as a unit is what sets them apart from other bands, and it’s clear that they were having fun making music together. This chemistry is evident in the album’s closing track, “Twist and Shout,” which features a memorable vocal performance from John Lennon and a catchy guitar riff.
