The Southern River Band (SRB) has emerged as a formidable force in the rock scene, gaining acclaim for their high-energy performances across Europe and the UK, and Australia. They have supported The Darkness and Eagles Of Death Metal, and are currently out on their own headlining run.

“D.I.Y.,” released on August 16, 2024, through Cooking Vinyl Australia, promises to be a significant addition to the classic rock genre. Following the success of their killer singles, “Vice City III” and “Stan Qualen,” along with fan-favorites like “Do You Miss Me When I’m Gone?” and “Chasin’ After Love,” this record is poised to captivate both long-time fans and newcomers alike.

Cal Kramer, the band’s frontman, has expressed confidence in the album’s potential, stating that it has been received by critics and fans as possibly the greatest rock ‘n’ roll record of the last 20 years. Whether or not one agrees with that bold claim, the album undeniably embodies the essence of rock music, offering a refreshing escape from the polished and manufactured sounds often dominating today’s charts. The album opens with “Vice City III,” a track that instantly grabs attention with its electrifying energy. The perfect mix of powerful instrumentation and catchy hooks hooks listeners from the get-go. It’s a testament to the band’s ability to create soundscapes that resonate with the spirit of rock, evoking memories of the genre’s golden era.

Following this, “Second Best” channels the rawness of Thin Lizzy, telling the compelling story of a girl who marries the wrong man—a narrative that reflects both personal struggles and universal themes. One of the standout tracks, “Do You Miss Me When I’m Gone?” introduces a country-infused vibe reminiscent of the 1970s, drawing comparisons to the iconic Eagles. This versatility showcases SRB’s ability to traverse various musical influences while maintaining their distinctive rock sound. “Chasin’ After Love” amplifies this with its irresistible rhythm, showcasing the band’s talent for crafting engaging melodies that invite listeners to sing along. “Stan Qualen” is a visceral experience, as it encapsulates everything that is good about rock ‘n’ roll—its raw emotion, rebellious spirit, and unapologetic attitude. Kramer elicits an overwhelming sense of urgency, as if proclaiming that the world is simply not ready for this immersive journey back to the essence of rock. Each riff and lyric is steeped in authenticity, reaffirming the band’s commitment to their craft.

The album also features “Cigarettes,” a powerful rocker that begs the question of why the Southern River Band isn’t yet a household name. The sheer energy and passion radiating from this track are infectious, highlighting the band’s potential to dominate the modern rock landscape. Similarly, “Chimney” reinforces the need for genuine rock music in today’s industry, shedding any semblance of artifice for a sound that feels both timeless and invigorating.

Accompanying the release of “D.I.Y.” is the thrilling short film “Vice City III – The Movie,” which complements the electrifying single with a narrative rich in suspense and intrigue. The film enhances the overall experience of the song, showcasing the band’s multi-faceted talent and creative vision. The Southern River Band, with endorsements from notable figures like Justin Hawkins of The Darkness, reminds us of the joy and excitement that rock music can bring. They embody the spirit of fun and spontaneity that many fans feel has been lost in recent years.

By staying true to their roots and delivering high-octane performances, they are indeed keeping rock and roll alive. “D.I.Y.” is shaping up to be a classic rock record that deserves a spot in every music lover’s collection. With its blend of powerful anthems and dynamic storytelling, the album is a testament to the Southern River Band’s unwavering dedication to their craft.

Its a great slab of rock, fans can anticipate a thrilling ride filled with memorable melodies and the raw energy that only true rock ‘n’ roll can deliver.
